Asilah is frequented by painters who use its walls as their canvas. Each August, Asilah hosts an international cultural festival, which attracts thousands of visitors. Established by the Phoenicians, Asilah was an important town through Roman times. It was captured by the Portuguese in 1471 and became a center of trade. The town, which came under Moroccan control in 1691, is enclosed within ramparts. Its narrow streets are paved or limed and lined with houses with blue or green-painted woodwork.
